ATI RAGE IIC DRIVER
This is not much of surprise from a chip without texture caching, still despite this optimization in synthetic tests the performance drop of bilinear filtering remains rather big. This late chip was very similar to the Rage II and supported the same application coding. It seems despite die shrink ATI did not made any architectural advancements, at least not in 3d. As a low-power solution with capable 2D-acceleration, the chip was used on many low-end graphics cards. Overall While ATI had a horrible Windows driver reputation since Mach64, and the packages have scary high amount of files, my test system was stable and everything went as it should. Windows 95 and Mac OS were not supported. It was also seen on Intel motherboards, as recently as , and was still used in for server motherboards.

Blending unit looks flexible enough for any mode early Direct3d apps could throw at it.

For it’s time it is quite feature rich and can draw nice pictures, unless one nasty bug kicks in. On top of that AGP 1x interface became an option, but without any advanced features. No ratings or reviews yet. This creates obvious color banding on low resolution textures viewed up close. Needless to say 32 bit frame-buffer color with so little memory, even if well implemented, is out of question. Reported chip clock is 75 MHz, but that is wrong without a doubt. Experience 3d gaming with mere 2 MB is very limiting even if the chip was powerful. It scored with imperfect, but well chosen feature set including all important blending modes.

To my knowledge Rage II did not get any better than this. Aside from the VR chip’s lower price-point, the main difference was that the former was a full bit design, while the VR, still a bit processor internally, used a bit external memory interface. There is quite recent driver set for this pair of chips, but opposed to 2. The processor was known for kic well-performing bit color mode, but also its poorly eage bit mode; strangely, the RAGE was not much faster in bit color despite the lower bandwidth requirements.
None of the advantages of my Rage IIc can help it challenge any high performance architecture, so I put it against last Virge in rxge. This, in addition to its early lack of OpenGL support, hurt sales for what was touted to be a solid gaming solution.
Thus the improvement over first Rage II comes down only to more memory. Again and better Autumn came and before anyone could yet realize first Rage will have miserable Direct3D compatibility, ATI unveiled second chip of the line. Maybe newer drivers broke compatibility with the tweak. Even if these features were “free”, Rage II performance would be far from best. But for the time Rage II line gained big market share among 3d accelerators.
It is the successor to the Mach series of 2D accelerators. There is one suspicious image quality issue, textures uic seem to have reduced color range.
Experience As you will see in the performance summary improvements in the 3d architecture are not to be seen in real games. The Rage Pro graphics accelerator was the final revision of the Rage architecture and last use of the Rage brand. See details for full description.

Announced performance was 26 million perspectively correct texture mapped pixels per second.

The chip was basically a die-shrunk Rage Prooptimized to be very inexpensive for solutions where only basic graphics output was necessary. This page was last edited on 7 Juneat This will limit number of tests but never mind, better to have casual card than rarely used exception.
All 3d primitives from points to quadrilaterals are supported. It offered Filtered Ratiometric Expansionwhich automatically adjusted images to full-screen iif. And Rage II ain’t some speedster. They were ATI’s first graphics solutions to carry the Mobility moniker.
